COPTIC
ORTHODOX EDUCATION BOARD
This
Board was established under the guidance of HG Bishop Paula when the
number of Colleges in Sydney began to increase to two, then three.
Its aims were to undertake careful master planning of Coptic schools
across Sydney for the future, and to find ways by which the Colleges
could work together for their mutual benefit. At present, there are
already a number of activities that take place involving the three
schools, such as the annual Coptic Colleges Liturgy. This year, the
liturgy was held at St Mary and St Mina’s Church in Bexley,
blessed by HG Bishop Paula and brought together over 700 students
from the three Colleges.
The
structure of this Board is currently under review. The presence of
the Bishop of Sydney as its Chairman will greatly strengthen this
Board and allow a far greater level of cooperation between the
Colleges. It is possible that this Board may also look at forming
the three Colleges into a ‘system’, similar to those of other
Churches, which could have many benefits for each College.
ST MARK’S
COPTIC ORTHODOX COLLEGE, WATTLE GROVE
St
Mark’s College was the first Coptic school to be established in
Sydney and the third in Australia, following the two schools in
Melbourne. After many difficulties in finding a site, it began in a
small, rented, unused Catholic school in Lidcombe in 1996 with 226
students from Kindergarten to Year 7. Fr Markos Tawfik was the
founding Director of the College. In 1997, a new Board was
established for the College under the direction of HG Bishop Paula
and Fr Antonios Kaldas became Director. In 1999, the College moved
to its present permanent site at Wattle Grove in the south west of
Sydney. In 2001, the first group of 21 students graduated from the
College, with the majority of them scoring well enough to go to
university. Of special blessing was the result of Mena Salib, a Year
11 student who completed his Mathematics Extension course one year
early and came first in the state in this subject.
2002
sees the College under the guidance of a new Principal, Mr John
Rekouniotis, with over 40 staff and 481 students from Kindergarten
to Year 12. The College is growing rapidly, and plans are being made
for expanding its facilities, either on the present site in Wattle
Grove, or by buying second campus nearby.
ST BISHOY
COPTIC ORTHODOX COLLEGE, MT DRUITT
St.
Bishoy Coptic Orthodox College is a Kindergarten to year 6 one
streamed school established in 2001. Currently, we have 5 classes
(Kindergarten - Year 5).
The school motto is:
"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me"
(Phil. 4:13)
The emblem of St Bishoy
Coptic Orthodox College was adopted because of its many special
contemplations. The rich pharonic culture is illustrated in the
image of the 'Kartouche' and the hieroglyphs, not forgetting the
contrast of
the gold sand and the life giving blue of the Nile. The beauty and
tranquillity of Australia is vividly depicted in the flower of the
Waratah.
The scroll represents the school's focus on learning, while the
glorious
Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ is the centrepiece of our lives as
Christians.
St. Bishoy is the
patron Saint of the College. His life story is the epitomy of the
faith, courage and the strong conviction of love with, and in, our
Lord Jesus Christ, in which the College aims to foster in the
children. They remind us of the sacrifice and strength of our Coptic
Orthodox Faith.
Our Faith - To provide
a holistic education, which strives to enhance the
spiritual, intellectual, social, cultural and physical potential of
young
people. The nurturing and development of Disciples of our Lord Jesus
Christ is our focus.
Our Mission - St.
Bishoy Coptic Orthodox College aims to assist each child to grow up
in the fullness of Christ. As a family, we aim to instruct our
children in recognition that "Through Christ we can do all
things."
